Renovation of Acrylic Viewing Windows
This project focused on renovating four acrylic aquarium windows at Diergaarde Blijdorp in Rotterdam: three square viewing panels and one dome window. The zoo wanted to increase the water level inside the aquarium, which meant the new window needed to be thicker so it could withstand significantly higher water pressure.
Initial Assessment
Our team began by inspecting the existing acrylic panels and surrounding structure. We evaluated the condition of the windows, the silicone seals, and the structural requirements needed to safely support a higher water level inside the aquarium.

Window Restoration
To restore optimal clarity, the acrylic panels were fully repolished. Over time, aquarium windows can accumulate scratches and micro-abrasions that reduce visibility. Our polishing process removes these imperfections and restores the original transparency of the acrylic.
The old silicone sealing was carefully removed and replaced with new high-performance aquarium-grade silicone. This step ensures long-term watertightness and structural reliability under constant water pressure.
Structural Upgrade
Because the aquarium would operate with a higher water level, one of the windows was replaced with a thicker acrylic panel. This upgrade guarantees the window can safely resist the increased hydrostatic pressure while maintaining perfect visibility.
